Our say (editorial column), The Capital, Sat. 2/23/02: Kent Island gains more of a voice KENT ISLAND will get the representation it needs now that the Queen Anne's County Board of County Commissioners has reluctantly voted to expand its membership from three to five. Two of the three commissioners voted for the proposal only because they felt duty-bound to honor the wishes of their constituents, who overwhelmingly favored the expansion in a nonbinding vote in November 2000. The additional commissioners may cost the county more money, but the county will be better prepared to handle the explosion of growth that is surely coming. In particular, Kent Island will gain hundreds of new homes in the next decade -- to be followed by traffic congestion and a strain on government services. Many Kent Island residents feel they were underrepresented on the board of commissioners as these development decisions were made. The expansion will give them two of the five representatives and, they hope, more clout. Given Kent Island's large share of the county's population, the greater representation is only just.
