Our say: Editor's notebook By THE CAPITAL EDITORIAL BOARD COST OF GROWTH -- The Queen Anne's County Commissioners have proposed raising impact fees on new homes from $2,335 to $6,854. That would make impact fees in the county the second-highest in the state. We applaud the commissioners for looking at ways to make developers pay a more realistic share of the additional costs they impose on the county's roads, utilities and schools. Since Kent Island is shouldering most of the burden of the county's future growth, residents there will be particularly pleased. But even with extra revenue from these impact fees, Kent Island cannot absorb the quick growth the commissioners have planned. We're still surprised the governor is standing aside and letting this county violate the spirit of his Smart Growth policy. But at least, by considering higher impact fees, the commissioners are giving some thought to gathering funds the county will need to meet a growing demand for services. Published October 23, 2001,
