The Capital 9/26/01 KIDL petition update The Kent Island Defense League has collected nearly 2,000 signatures for a petition to allow county residents to have a bigger say over the 1,350-home Four Seasons project. On Aug. 21, county commissioners voted to allow intense development in the Critical Area. Two weeks later, members of the grassroots organization announced they plan to collect enough signatures to force a referendum on the issue in the 2002 election. The effort could delay if not halt the age-restricted project planned for 562 acres on Castle Marina Road. The group needs to submit to the county about 2,200 signatures, or 10 percent of the county's registered voters, by Sunday. (see Note below) Specifically, the referendum will ask county voters if they believe the county should have granted the growth allocation. The defense league plans to continue collecting more signatures this weekend at the Kent Island Acme and Food Lion stores. Mike Koval, league vice president, said he is certain that the group will be able to get enough signatures by the end of the month. "The signatures are real easy to get," he said. "People are (angry)." The league is also planning to hold its second annual Bull and Oyster Roast fund-raiser on Oct. 14 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Grasonville VFW. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12.50 for kids ages 5 to 12, and children under eat free. To buy tickets, send checks made out to the Kent Island Defense League to KIDL, P. O. Box 692, Stevensville, MD 21666. For more information on the referendum petition or the roast, call Rick Moser at 410-643-9789 or Mike Koval at 410-643-3935. Residents can also e-mail KIDL@toadmail.com or visit the group's Web site at www.SaveKentIsland.org. Published September 12,

Note: We plan to submit the petition to the Elections Board on Friday 9/28. If their count does not show the full 10% of registered voters required we should have enough (more than 50% of the 10%) to get an extension. Please keep getting those petitions signed until we get an official count. If you haven't signed stop by the Library meeting room Friday from 9-5 or Saturday from 9-1.
